Written in Code: Sculpting the City and Spaces Between

When: Friday 6 November 2026 @ 2:00–3:00 PM

Where: The Forum @ DowntownDesign Dubai, D3

Description

A city’s physical form is largely shaped by planning codes, design guidelines and regulatory frameworks. Yet what makes a city truly liveable and loveable extends beyond its form. It lies in the codes of conduct within a society — how we interact, embrace diversity, appreciate cultures, create opportunities and foster a sense of belonging.

This panel explores two forces that shape our cities. First, the written codes that shape the physical city—how regulations sculpt a city’s skyline which influences a city’s global image and its appeal as a place to live, work, invest and play. Second, the social codes that shape how people experience the city—how shared values, cultural expression and everyday interactions foster equality, inclusion and a sense of belonging across diverse communities.

Through this lens, we will explore the strategies, opportunities and shared responsibilities, and that good design can transform the spaces into places of connection, vibrancy and possibility.
