Dr. M. Nabyl Chenaf is a professor of Architecture and Dean of the school of Architecture, Art and Design at the American University in Dubai. Prior to that, he worked as the Editor of the Arabic/English edition of l”ARCA magazine of Architecture, Design and Visual Communication.
He served as the president of the national committee of pedagogy of town management and urban techniques in Algeria, as well as a member/chair of organizing and scientific committees in several international conferences on Architecture and Urban Planning worldwide. He is a reviewer for research funding institutions and has been regularly involved in research supervision and juries for international competitions in Architecture and Urban Design.
Dr. Chenaf designed several buildings and urban settlements including new neighborhoods, rehabilitation of squatters and restoration. Finally, Dr. Chenaf delivers training workshops in town management and planning to senior decision-makers and operators in the field in several countries.

This seminar explores how collaborative design approaches and interdisciplinary tools are shaping new directions in urban design practice.

Drawing from recent urban design and research explorations, the lecture showcases student-generated work that applies advanced design tools and technologies to propose more adaptive and inclusive urban environments. The lecture also touches on questions of agency, who contributes to, and who ultimately governs, the shaping of the city.


Webinar Speakers

Dr. Maryam Shafiei is Program Director for Master of Urban Design and Digital Environments (MUDDE) at American University in Dubai. She is a researcher, educator, designer, and maker, holding B.Arch, M.Arch and a PhD in Architecture and Urban design. Throughout her career, she has gained valuable teaching and research experience across a wide range of topics in Design and Architecture, particularly environmental sustainability, urban design, and digital design and construction technology.
In her recent work, Dr Shafiei focuses on the intersection of computational design, sustainability, and application of innovative tools and technologies such as robotic arms and augmented reality to advance the development of the built environment at both architectural and urban scales. Her dedication lies in fostering innovative approaches to design across various scales, promoting creativity, environmental consciousness, and inclusivity.

Dr Shafiei has also engaged in design of several architectural projects and won several design and research competitions. Her design and research outcomes have been presented in several conferences, published in journals and book chapters and, exhibited in several international exhibitions such as SHE-Robots (Australia and Netherland) and Botanica (Australia).
