A Journey Into Architecture Archives

Last Saturday, AIA Middle East members joined a guided tour of the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, with Sahil Abdul Latheef, exploring the exhibition Damascus, Baghdad and Tunisia at Al Qasimiya School in Sharjah.

The exhibition offered a fascinating journey through the architectural interventions and experimental civic projects of the 1950s to the 1980s, showcasing the rich architectural heritage of three of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. From hand-sketched perspectives and manually ink-drawn blueprints to archival photographs, video installations, and 3D-printed models, participants enjoyed a rare opportunity to experience architectural works and archival material seldom seen elsewhere.

Beyond celebrating remarkable design and craftsmanship, the exhibition prompted reflection on ambitious projects shaped by history, politics, and a shared vision for civic life. The afternoon concluded with refreshments and an opportunity to connect with colleagues and friends from AIA Middle East and RIBA Gulf Chapter, making for an inspiring blend of architecture, conversation, and community.
